8-Mic Shootout With David Hooper – PES 159

I discuss podcast audio production in-depth with David Hooper – host of Build a Big Podcast and author of Big Podcast.

8-Mic Shootout With David Hooper – PES 159

My returning guest is David Hooper – host of Build a Big Podcast, author of Big Podcast, and a media marketing expert specializing in getting people’s message out via podcasting, building audiences, and more.

David recorded 8 different clips using 8 different microphones, and in this episode him and I listen to each one, give our thoughts on the sound, and at the end David reveals which clips were recorded with which microphones!

Play along by doing this: BEFORE you listen to the episode and hear our opinions, go to the very end of the episode and listen to all the clips yourself and make notes of your opinions of each clip. Then listen to the episode and hear our opinions, which you can then compare to your own.

Personally, I grouped the clips into 4 tiers. Tiers 1 is the best sounding, tier 2 is the next best, tier 3 is OK, and tier 4 kinda OK sounding.

1st Tier:

  • Clip 8

2nd Tier:

  • Clip 1
  • Clip 2

3rd Tier:

  • Clip 3
  • Clip 7

4th Tier:

  • Clip 4
  • Clip 5
  • Clip 6

Near the end David reveals which clips were recorded with which mic’s!

Thanks for being a great guest, David!

  1. Wow! I can’t believe the BLUE YETI made it into Chris’ tier 2!!! The apocalypse is upon us, hahaha! This show certainly highlights how unique our voices are and it’s not critical to spend hundreds of dollars to have your voice sound good. This was a fun show…bring the intro music back and the grunts!

    1. Thanks Michael! And btw I believe there was some small issue with David’s XLR input to his interface, which somehow degraded all the XLR mics a bit, which in turn made the USB mic’s sound better in comparison. This is proven by the fact that the same ATR-2100 sounded markedly different when plugged in USB vs. XLR.

  2. Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for this episode. David Hooper is great and I started listening to his show after we met at Podcast Movement 2018.

Years ago when I got my ATR2100 I was using a PC and at the time when I connected the mic via USB I couldn’t get it to sound loud enough so I went back to my Samson C03U. The ATR2100 sat in a box for years not being used. A few years later when I finally got my Mac and connected the mic via USB it sounded fine and I have been using it that way ever since.

What I would like to see one day, is a video (or some images) showing the best mic placement for different mics. I don’t think the manufacturers give enough instructions on how different mics are designed to work best. Some of them have drawings but I think it would be better to see people using the mic and to hear the results of different mic placements.

    Chat soon Chris!

  3. This was great. Thanks for doing it. I think it would be very interesting to compare different interfaces as well. Pick one mic and then try it through the Focusrite, a Universal, Native Instruments, Sound Devices, Zoom….

I think the differences there might be really significant, and illustrate the point that everything in your signal chain matters.

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks Jimmy! And regarding your suggestion, check out the Podcastage YouTube channel because Bandrew there may have already done something like that 😉
