Audio quality has been scientifically proven to have a significant effect on how listeners evaluate a speaker.
Check out this study: “The quality of audio influences whether you believe what you hear” —> https://news.usc.edu/141042/why-we-believe-something-audio-sound-quality/
*Bonus rant message to all PR agencies and anyone else representing and booking authors/speakers/etc. on podcasts: WAKE UP and make sure your client/author/speaker/etc. has a decent audio setup so they sound at least halfway professional and don’t require 20-30 minutes of sound-checking and arm-twisting to ONLY end up with barely passable sub-par audio quality. WAKE UP! You really don’t care at all if your client sounds like absolute garbage??? Jeez people. Sound quality has been scientifically proven to have a SIGNIFICANT effect on how listeners perceive someone. If you want an advantage over everyone who will ignore this advice, get with the program and modernize your audio setup and quality.

Absolutely agree.
I will forgive bad audio if it’s really compelling – an interview with an eye witness after a dramatic event, but not something in a controlled environment. Bad audio is saying “I don’t give a monkey’s about you”.
It amazes me that people think it’s perfectly acceptable to stick a yeti in the middle of a kitchen table, have three friends talk all over each other, have no structure, no editing and expect me to waste an hour of my life listening to it. On top of that, expect to get sponsors!
No serious business really wants to be associated with an amateur, badly produced, badly recorded show. It would reflect on their brand. Having said that, there are some which will take anything if its cheap enough.
So, please respect your listeners and, if sponsorship is your thing, earn the most for your time. If not, then just record yourself and keep it to yourself!
Rant over.
Wow, great article to reference on my podcast production/editing site when I get it online (very soon). Thanks, Chris!
