The Electro-Voice RE20 microphone is extremely popular in radio studios.
It’s also one of the best podcasting microphones, but the $450 price tag puts it out of range of many podcasters.
I use an RE20 on my show and it’s a great sounding microphone on most people’s voices.

The RE20 makes it easier to get a great sound for a voice. However, don’t be put off if you can’t afford one. The most important element is can the listener understand what you are saying?
Unlike music recording, where tone, sonic spectrum and landscape creation can be all important, with most podcasts, intelligibility is key.
I can listen to a track and not know what the singer is saying, but still enjoy listening. Not the case with a podcast.
Cheaper (or different) mics can produce a similar clarity to the RE20, providing they are used correctly in the right environment.
Expensive mics don’t replace bad mic technique or a bad environment.
