Usually, for a remote interview, I ask them if they have a mic or a headset and what it is.
If they are unsure or don’t have anything, I’ll send them something. Usually a cheap usb headset that I can afford to lose, unless I know them really well or am likely to see them after the recording.
Asking them when the session starts is too late.
