Becoming known for producing podcasts within a specific niche can be great for many reasons:
- You can pick a niche that you know and love, therefore you’ll never be bored with the topic
- Forces you to narrow your search for new clients, which makes it easier to search for potential new clients
- Promote your services at conferences that serve your specific niche
- You can become known in that niche and get referrals more easily
- And more, I’m sure
Example: I believe Steve Stewart, head honcho at the Podcast Editors Club on Facebook, enjoys working on many financial podcasts.

I guess that helps if you understand what they are talking about.
Developing a name in a niche can be a more cost effective route for marketing yourself, but you will need to understand if the niche is big enough to support you.
Ensuring that you have the right credentials and resources that that niche requires for you to be accepted may be a good idea. If the clients want a personal touch, then living in another country may not be a good idea. If your track record is focused around ComicCons, it might not translate well if you want to pitch to Accountants etc.
However, being ‘known’ as the go-to person for a style will help you maintain your rates higher.
My podcast focuses on a very small niche of cyclists in and around Louisville, KY. More than anything, it’s a great vehicle for building community, and that in turn fosters credibility in recommending products and/or services to the listeners. It’s not a “get rich” strategy, but it certainly pays for the time and materials I put into the podcast.
