I bought four Sennheiser e835 microphones for my physical podcast studio in NJ, which I operated from 2012-2015. They cost around $99 each.
I decided on the e835 over other microphones mostly because I tested 4-5 handheld microphones at a local Guitar Center. I brought my portable digital recorder to the store and proceeded to plug in different microphones and talk for a bit, then listen back to decide which model I would buy.
I chose the e835 over the SM58 and a couple other handheld microphones.
To me it sounds a bit clearer than the SM58 and also has a higher output level. Overall it’s comparable to the SM58 but has it’s own flavor.
Have you used this mic personally?

I would recommend anyone to do the same as you. Go try out some mics at a gear shop. Taking a recorder is a great idea as it will reduce colouration from bone conduction when listening directly.
I think setting out for an SM58 or equivalent is a good idea as it should tell the assistant that you are looking for a robust cardioid dynamic mic.
The SM58 is so well known, it’s a great signpost of what you are looking for. However, it may not be the best choice for your voice or the sound you want to get.
I have one of those mic’s and 5-6 SM58’s. I mostly use them in my portable set up and because I didn’t hear a huge amount of difference, went with the SM58’s because of their reputation for being nearly bulletproof.
I have two e835’s and use them for guest interviews on location or in my home studio. I love them!
