Specializing in Producing/Editing Podcasts in a Specific Niche

One way of growing a podcast production business is to focus on producing/editing podcasts in a specific niche. This makes it possible to become the go-to production person in that niche, enables you to have more fun if you already love that niche, and allows you to learn lots of niche-specific knowledge that can be helpful to future clients in that niche (and this specialized knowledge allows you to raise your rates from time to time because you’re able to offer more value).

Of course this doesn’t mean that you automatically have to reject any and all potential clients who are not in that niche, because if you’re just beginning to grow your podcast production business you may have to bring on clients just to survive. But if/when you become very busy in that niche and known in that niche, it should be possible to pass on clients who don’t fit your focus.

  1. “Being niche” is the ONLY reason I’m able to generate 6-figures as a podcast editor.

    Having knowledge in a specific genre (for me it’s personal finances and investing) allows me to relate to a specific type of podcaster. They know that I know what they know, you know?

    For example: A podcaster came to me looking for a podcast editor. I share these types of opportunities with members of the Podcast Editor Academy (a membership site for professional podcast editors).

    But this time, the person was in my niche – so I also applied.

    The podcaster received a dozen responses, had a couple conversations with other applicants, but ultimately agreed to work with me because I “get” him.

    I wasn’t the cheapest, and I assured him I wasn’t the best, but I “hang around” with others in the same community as he does. There could be networking opportunities that come along with working with me.

    If you need the work then don’t be picky. When you have the chance, start focusing on the type of client or genre/topics that you can relate to. It’ll allow you to charge more – because there are side benefits from working with people in your niche.
