Pascal Wyse – Composer, Sound Designer, Mixer – PES 168
My awesome guest is Pascal Wyse! He does sound design, mixing and musical composition for Cautionary Tales (podcast). He wrote the theme tune for Folsom Untold – an Audible series about Johnny Cash’s prison gig, and also did sound design for that. And among many other credits, he also worked on Haunted for Panoply. Follow him on Twitter @PascalWyse.
Here’s a fraction of what we discussed:
- Keeps different cues in different DAW sessions. (Some folks write their music in Logic and then ProTools has the main session)
- Reaper sub-projects: Opens up as a tab – another working session, the same length as the Master session, when you save it renders and inserts it into the Master session.
- For creating atmosphere/space: Alitverb convolution reverb
- Mixes on speakers, and for final pass he monitors on headphones.
- Genelec 1029 with Genelec Subwoofer
- Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT990’s
- Microphones: Sennheiser MKH range mics, DPA Lavalier mics (tiny, can get them into extraordinary places)
- Double mid-side!!!
- Parabolic mic, mounted inside a satellite dish thingy, the most isolated sound you can get!
- Field recorders: Sonosax (Swiss company, light, clean preamps), Aaton Cantar X2, used to use Sound Devices stuff.
- He’s very into field recording
- He uses Sonarworks
- Fabfilter plugins – EQ, compressor,
- Waves Scheps 73 EQ
- iZotope RX
- Tim Harford’s voice processing for Cautionary Tales: No cleanup, Fabfilter Pro Q-3, Fabfilter C-2 (Pro Voice preset which uses parallel compression), Vocal Rider (He fed the sidechain with the background music! Stopped the feeling of a sound being crushed and not coming through.)
- For voice actors: AudioEase – “Indoor” plugin (sounds realistic, panned L&R a little bit), Speakerphone plugin
- Convolution reverb: Engineers have gone into a space and recorded the response of the actual space.
- Parabolic mics: https://www.telinga.com
- Schoeps mics: https://schoeps.de/en.html
- DPA mics: https://www.dpamicrophones.com
- Mixing with Mike: https://www.mixingwithmike.com
- Amazing sound recordist Chris Watson: https://chriswatson.net
Production workflow for Cautionary Tales:
- Table read
- Tim will record his parts, he will read in actor lines
- Receives files (REALLY likes it when they get CLEAN dialogue takes, so he doesn’t have to stress over that aspect of production)
- Brings files into DAW, makes markers where he might want to put things,
- Put in theme music
- Some library sounds here and there
- What worlds are people in and do we need to hear that world?
- Uses “mastering” effects
- Sends out the mix
- Gets feedback and makes changes
Thanks for being a great guest, Pascal!

Chris’s Goody Bag – PES 163
Thanks to Focusrite for sponsoring this episode! If you haven’t checked out the new Focusrite Scarlett 3rd Gen. series of interfaces yet, you can see them here.
I overview recent Daily Goody‘s (from Nov. 8 – Nov. 20). Here’s the link to view all those blog posts. And don’t forget that you can sign up to receive the Daily Goody in your email every day or once per week. Sign up here.
Here are the Daily Goody posts that we discussed in this episode:
- After Removing an Umm
- Using Multiband Compression When Mastering Episodes
- Episode Turnaround Times Expected by Clients
- Remember Steve Savanyu’s Awesome Episode?
- Hey, I Did a Thing!
- The Dynamic Range of a Participants Voice
- Small External Hard Drive for Session Files
- When’s the Last Time You Rearranged Your Studio Setup?
- FabFilter Pro-C 2 Compressor Plugin
- If Your Guest Is Using a Tabletop Conference Call Microphone…
- Voice Meeter?
- Recent Episode on Which I Used Fabfilter Plugins ONLY
- Demand One Pushup for Every Umm?
Notes on my production for this episode:
Recording: I used a Samson Q2U microphone going XLR into a Focusrite 2i2 3rd Gen. interface (picture above) with the Air mode activated. My mouth was about 1-2″ from the foam windscreen. I recorded the raw audio in SoundForge Pro.
Post-Production: First I had to de-plosive the raw recording because it had huge plosives on it due to my close proximity, even though I had a windscreen on the mic. Then for mixing I mostly used the Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin from Waves, as well as a bit of Fabfilter Pro-G gate and Vocal Rider from Waves.
My thoughts on the final sound of my voice: Please note I limited myself to the Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin in this episode (except for the couple others listed above) so I could try it out in full. I like the Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain plugin a lot but I would have liked to do more precise EQ’ing on my voice, and I would have liked to try a faster attack time but I wasn’t sure how to do that in this plugin. Since there’s no attack knob I’ll have to research the difference between the “Original” and “Modern” compressor styles. Also, the sound of my voice due to the Q2U mic and 2i2 with Air combo was pretty good!
Announcement: The start date for the next PES will be January 14, 2020

- Should You Update Your Computer to a Newly Released Operating System?
- When Guests Connect Using a Windows PC or Surface
- A Guest Using Two Microphones in a Recording Studio
Notes on my production for this episode:
Recording: I used a Heil PR30 microphone and my mouth was about 1-2″ from the foam windscreen. The mic was plugged directly into a Sound Devices MixPre-6 and recorded using Audio Hijack.
Post-Production: First I had to de-plosive the raw recording because it had huge plosives on it due to my close proximity, even though I had a windscreen on the mic. Then for mixing I mostly used the Celestial plugin from Acustica (which is Free until February 14, 2020) as well as a bit of Fabfilter Pro-G gate and Vocal Rider from Waves.
My thoughts on the final sound of my voice: Please note I limited myself to the Celestial plugin in this episode (except for the couple others listed above) so I could try it out in full. I like the Celestial plugin a lot but I would have liked to do more precise EQ’ing on my voice, and I would have liked to use its compressor a bit more gently and in conjunction with an additional compressor plugin. Also, the tone of my voice through the PR30 is not the best I’ve ever heard.

8-Mic Shootout With David Hooper – PES 159
My returning guest is David Hooper – host of Build a Big Podcast, author of Big Podcast, and a media marketing expert specializing in getting people’s message out via podcasting, building audiences, and more.
David recorded 8 different clips using 8 different microphones, and in this episode him and I listen to each one, give our thoughts on the sound, and at the end David reveals which clips were recorded with which microphones!
Play along by doing this: BEFORE you listen to the episode and hear our opinions, go to the very end of the episode and listen to all the clips yourself and make notes of your opinions of each clip. Then listen to the episode and hear our opinions, which you can then compare to your own.
Personally, I grouped the clips into 4 tiers. Tiers 1 is the best sounding, tier 2 is the next best, tier 3 is OK, and tier 4 kinda OK sounding.
1st Tier:
- Clip 8
2nd Tier:
- Clip 1
- Clip 2
3rd Tier:
- Clip 3
- Clip 7
4th Tier:
- Clip 4
- Clip 5
- Clip 6
Near the end David reveals which clips were recorded with which mic’s!
Thanks for being a great guest, David!
